Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a hog roast take to cook?
How many people will a pig feed?
Is there a minimum number of people you cater for?
Can we provide our own pig?
Can you just do the pig along side other food?
What if the weather is bad on the day of our event?
We can do a hog roast either inside or outside. While having hog roasts outside may be perfect for an outdoor event or BBQ in the summer it’s not ideal for a Christmas party! Holding your hog roast indoors is just as easy for us to do and just as enjoyable for you and your guests. So if the weather does let you down on your special day we can always make arrangements to cook inside. As long as we have a large well ventilated space it is not a problem. Or we can cook the hog roast outside and then move it inside to serve. Another alternative would be to hire a marquee for your event.
Some of my guests don’t eat pork. Is there an alternative?
Yes. We have catered for many occasions where some or all of the guests have not eaten pork although we are famous for our outstanding hog roasts it is not all that we do. We offer a selection of other tasty meats, which like our hog roasts are prepared and cooked to perfection. Choose from Lamb, Aberdeen Angus Beef, Kelly Bronze Turkey right through to barbecue menus. We also cater for vegetarians and offer a selection of tasty meat free alternatives.
What is the cost for a hog roast?
Do you provide serving staff?
All of our menus include a spitting pig chef and catering assistant to prepare, carve and serve. Whether you require serving staff or not are entirely your choice. Again every event is very different and we have catered for all different styles. We can provide an informal style buffet where guests help themselves or a more formal style of event where food would be served to the table by professional waiters/ waitresses. Some of our packages will include experienced waiting on staff and front of house person. We can provide staff to serve canapés or reception drinks and lay tables. Whatever type of service you require please just ask.
What areas/ locations do you cover?
We cover the whole of the UK from the tip of Scotland to the tip of Cornwall and all points in between. Spitting Pig is a nationwide business. We do this through a series of local depots based in many different locations throughout the UK so that we can cover all regions with local service and staff done with a large company back up. Our head office and enquiry centre is based in Lancashire.
Can I make changes to the sample menus?
Is cutlery and crockery included in the final quote?
Yes. Your quotation is fully inclusive of all cutlery that you will need. For some packages this will simply be napkins for a bbq or disposable plate’s cutlery and paper napkins for informal buffet style catering and on other packages will be real cutlery and crockery glasses etc for more formal style events.
Are all the spitting pig staff fully trained?
Yes. Spitting Pig has over thirty years experience as professional caterers and we are registered, inspected and approved caterer by local authority. All of our chefs and catering assistants are fully trained and qualified. Waiting on staff are also fully trained to the highest standard. Our staff also hold food hygiene certificates and work accordingly at all times. All of our staff will treat your guests courteously, your venue with respect and leave you discreetly to enjoy the rest of your event, with no mess to tidy away.
If I wanted to hire a machine and cook myself for my party would this be possible?
What sort of occasions are best to serve hog roast?
Good question, and to be honest there is no exact answer? Why? because hog roast really is one of those catering solutions that really could be suitable for any event. Hog roast makes a great party food where you want to encourage a really friendly, relaxed and informal atmosphere. Hog roast rolls (or ‘pig in a bun’ as we like to call them) really are a big hit with all those who try them. For those ‘posh’ events then you may be better going with our gourmet hog roast option which is in effect a really smart way to serve up hog roast.
If I buy my own machine, am I restricted to cooking pig?
We frequently get asked if hog roast machines are purely for hog roasting and whilst it may sound like they have to be, they are not! One of the great things about these superb machines is that whilst they are built to cook pigs, they are more than capable of cooking other meats too. And if you really want to branch out then you simply have to investigate the great range of accessories and add ons that really open up a whole new world of cooking on your hog roast machine, including BBQ and chicken spits.
Should I cook the pig or get a caterer to do it?
A very good question and one that you may need to think carefully about. Of course, if you do plan on cooking the pig yourself then you will need somewhere suitably accommodating to cook it and that means having a hog roast machine. Luckily, you can hire one from Spitting Pig, complete with gas and even the pig if you need one! The best thing about our catering service is experience of cooking pigs and the fact that you don’t have to do a thing. Just sit back and enjoy a delicious and beautifully cooked hog roast.
Why does hog roast taste so fabulous?
Well, we could be smart and say that taste is, well, a matter of taste, but that would be cheating! Sounds like you have already made your mind up about the great taste of hog roast and we certainly going to argue with you on that one, but there are quite a few reasons why hog roast tastes so good. Probably the most important factor is slow roasting because this gives you that incredibly rich and wholesome taste that is reminiscent of old style cooking. Everyone loves a roast and hog roast has to be up there with the best.
Is hog roast a good choice for a corporate event?
Do pigs have curly tails? Of course it is, in fact we would go as far as to say that hog roast is probably the most perfect option for any work based or corporate event that you could think of. Work functions used to be notoriously difficult to find suitable catering for but bring in a hog roast caterer and you have no worries. They can even cook another meat for you if there are people there who cannot or who don’t like meat. Hog roast is always popular so yes, definitely!

Spoilt For Choice!
The chef was extremely knowledgeable and friendly, making the whole experience even better. His expertise really shone through in the quality of the roast, and he was a pleasure to have around. The presentation was spot-on, with a wide range of delicious additions to customize each plate. Even our dogs couldn’t stop staring, eagerly waiting for their portion!
Spitting Pig exceeded our expectations in every way, and we couldn’t have been happier with the service.

Delicious food first class service friendly people. Big thanks to James, Jackie and Roy.
Thank you so much.
We were worried that for a smart black tie event that they would not be the right thing, but they were wonderful. They were invariably professional, well organised, accommodating and efficient people with which to deal. The pork itself was juicy and really delicious – cooked for hours – they had woken at 4am to have it ready for 8:30pm but the crackling was what attracted the highest praise. The sides and salads were all great too – and they served my birthday cake with their usual efficiency. They seemed to be a really well run and friendly team of people too, if only more businesses were like them.
